COVID-19 Update - January 25, 2021

Today, January 25, marks the one-year anniversary of the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Ontario.  It’s been a tough year and we know many people are experiencing COVID fatigue.  We urge everyone to continue following all public health advice so we can control the spread of the virus.

Case count

  • Our data from Sunday, January 24, shows that Huron-Perth has a cumulative total of 1,173 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 36 cases added over the weekend. There are currently 137 active cases.
    • Details on where the active cases are can be found on our COVID-19 in Huron and Perth webpage.
    • There are currently 5 Huron-Perth residents in hospital due to COVID-19.
    • We are reporting a total of 36 deaths due to COVID-19. These include the death reported on our website on Saturday, and the three deaths reported on our website today. All four of these are connected to the Caressant Care outbreak.
      • Our thoughts go out to the individuals’ families and loved ones, and we extend our condolences to all residents and staff at Caressant Care during this very difficult time.

  • Hospitals:
    • There continues to be one (1) active hospital outbreak in Huron-Perth on the Surgery Unit at Stratford General Hospital. We hope to declare this outbreak over soon.
  • Long-Term Care & Retirement Homes:
    • There are currently two active long-term care outbreaks and one active retirement home outbreak in Huron-Perth.
    • We are very pleased to report that the outbreak at Exeter Villa retirement and nursing home is over.  This was a large outbreak and we commend staff for all their hard work to end the outbreak.
    • We have also declared the outbreaks at Spruce Lodge, Wildwood Care Centre, Fordwich Village, and Queensway over.
  • Total case numbers for all active outbreaks can be found on our COVID-19 in Huron and Perth webpage.
  • Update on Caressant Care in North Perth:
    • On the Caressant Care Long-term care side, we are reporting four additional cases among staff.
    • This means a total of 43 confirmed cases among residents and 25 confirmed cases among staff. Sadly there have been 9 deaths among residents.
    • On the retirement home side, we are reporting one additional case among residents. This brings the total on the retirement home side to 30 residents, 8 staff. Again, sadly there has been 1 death among residents.
    • I am pleased to share that provincial testing was performed on Caressant Care swabs in order to check for Variants of Concern (such as the UK variant). Results are now back and show that these cases are NOT the variant strain.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

  • In Huron-Perth, we are still on track to complete first doses in residents of long-term care today and first doses for residents in high-risk retirement homes by January 27.
  • As you saw last week, Huron Perth Public Health has an ultra-cold freezer to store the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.  This was donated by Bruce Power and we are extremely grateful for their assistance.
  • Having this freezer will allow us to receive vaccine directly into our community once supplies permit and thus will facilitate the continued rollout of our local vaccine program.
