Public health nurses work with each school community to identify their unique characteristics and create a healthy school. Nurses can address a variety of topics based on school requests.

A healthy school approach is a comprehensive approach where school administrators, teachers, students and community agencies work together to create an environment that will make a positive impact on a child's health and learning.

Perth County

The school-based public health nursing program is offered through schools in the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB). Nurses have regularly scheduled hours at assigned schools. Nurses provide supportive counselling to students and work with school staff, parents, guardians and students to address physical, social and mental health concerns.

School staff, parents, guardians and students can make a referral to the program. Most students aged 12 and over can consent to services themselves.

School health supports and services are offered to other schools in Perth County who are not part of the AMDSB.
