HPPH advises summer day camps and programs to take precautions against measles
Huron Perth, ON – As the measles outbreak continues in Ontario, including in Huron and Perth counties, Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is urging summer day camp and program providers to take proactive measures to protect the health of children and staff.
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can spread easily to un- or under-vaccinated individuals in group settings. “Vaccination is important for camp participants as it is the best way to prevent the infection,” says Dr. Miriam Klassen, Medical Officer of Health for Huron Perth. “In addition, camp and program organizers must be prepared to respond effectively to potential measles cases to protect the community's health."
HPPH advises summer day camp and program providers to prioritize:
-
Communicating to parents and caregivers the importance of having immunization records up to date and available in case of exposure to measles
-
Identifying measles symptoms and following protocols for suspected cases
-
Understanding reporting requirements and procedures for managing cases and contacts
Camp operators and organizers are encouraged to visit www.hpph.ca/measles for the latest information and guidance before programs begin and to check the website regularly for the latest public health information.
HPPH continues to monitor the measles outbreak and will provide updates as needed.
