November is Radon Action Month

Huron Perth, ON – November is Radon Action Month in Canada, and Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is encouraging residents to test their homes for radon.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is released from the ground. It can be found in varying concentrations all over Canada. Radon is odourless, tasteless, and invisible. When radon is released into the outdoor air, levels are low and generally not a concern. However, when radon enters enclosed spaces, like homes, levels can build to unsafe amounts and become harmful to our health. Continued long-term exposure to elevated levels of radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

“The only way to know the radon level in your home is to test for it,” says Chris Boyes, Public Health Inspector at HPPH. “Radon test kits are available at most major home renovation stores or can be purchased online. Be sure to purchase kits that are approved by the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP). Taking appropriate measures to reduce radon levels in your home could greatly benefit your health.”

Health Canada recommends homeowners test their homes for radon using a long-term test.  Long-term tests monitor indoor air for a minimum of three months. It is best to complete this test during the fall or winter months. The most accurate results are received when the radon detector is placed in the lowest level of the home where homeowners spend a minimum of four hours per day.

Radon Action Month serves as a reminder that by taking action today, you can protect your health in the future.
