Injury and Falls Prevention

Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is committed to keeping you safe from injury. Learn more about bicycle and road safety, concussion prevention and recovery as well as falls prevention. We are also a member of the Coalition for Huron Injury Prevention (CHIP).

Falls prevention

Anyone can fall, but as you get older, the risk increases. Falls are the number one reason for injury-related death, hospitalization and emergency department visits for older adults in Canada. We recommend that seniors report all falls to their primary care provider.

Tips to prevent falls

Visit Parachute for tips and resources on preventing falls.

To connect with local resources in your area, call 2-1-1 or visit 211. Enter “falls prevention” or “preventing falls”, etc in the search box, along with your city or town to find local programs and supports for preventing falls.

Concussions

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Concussions can cause stretching and damage to cells, which affects how the brain functions.

If you, your child, or someone you know, is experiencing symptoms of a concussion, you should:

  • Stop any activity immediately
  • Visit a healthcare professional as soon as possible
  • Stay with family or friends and avoid being alone
